Privacy Policy for Heard It Too

Last updated: September 26, 2026

Heard It Too (“we,” “us,” “our,” or “the App”) is a citizen-science tool for tracking how information spreads geographically and over time. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

By creating an account or using Heard It Too, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide directly:

  • Email address (used for account creation and login)
  • Password (stored securely; we never see or store your password in plain text)
  • Username
  • Home ZIP code
  • Content you post (“contributions”), including any category tags you apply
  • Your confirmations of other users’ contributions (“I’ve heard this too”)

Information collected automatically:

  • The ZIP code and timestamp associated with each confirmation you make
  • Basic visitor analytics (e.g., pages viewed, general usage patterns) to help us understand how the App is used and improve it

We do not currently collect precise GPS location — only the ZIP code you provide.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Operate core features of the App (the feed, confirmations, and the Spread map)
  • Detect and prevent duplicate or abusive posts
  • Maintain the security and integrity of the platform
  • Understand aggregate usage patterns to improve the App
  • Communicate with you about your account (e.g., email confirmation, password reset)

3. What Other Users Can See

Heard It Too is a social app, and some information you provide is visible to other users by design:

  • Your username and your posted contributions
  • The categories you’ve tagged
  • Your home ZIP code, which is shown publicly — for example as the origin ZIP on your posts and on the Spread map
  • The fact that you confirmed a specific contribution, along with the ZIP code and timestamp of that confirmation
  • A profile view showing your public contributions and confirmations

Your email address and password are never shown to other users.

4. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We share information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers: We use third-party services to operate the App, including:
    • Supabase (database, authentication, and storage)
    • Mapbox (to display the Spread map)
    • Lovable (application hosting and infrastructure)
These providers process data on our behalf and are bound by their own privacy and security practices.
  • Aggregated or de-identified data: We may analyze and share information-spread patterns in an aggregated or de-identified form (for example, general trends about how information moves geographically) that does not identify you individually. We do not currently sell this data, but we may explore this in the future; if our practices change in a way that affects you individually, we will update this policy.
  • Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.

5. Content and Accuracy

Heard It Too is a tool for tracking the spread of information — it does not verify the accuracy or truth of any contribution posted by users. Contributions represent what a user reports having heard, not a confirmed fact. Please use judgment when interpreting content on the App.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account information and content for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account or request deletion of your data, we will remove your personal information within a reasonable time, except where retention is required for legal or security purposes.

7. Your Choices and Rights

You may:

  • Update your account information at any time
  • Flag content you believe violates our community standards
  • Request deletion of your account and associated personal data by contacting us (see below)

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights regarding your personal data under applicable law.

8. Children's Privacy

Heard It Too is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

9. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including secure password storage and access controls on our database. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify users directly.
